Lipscomb out-shot and out-rebounded Marshall on Saturday at the Henderson Center in Huntington. And when all was said and done, the small school from Nashville had pulled off a 72-62 upset of The Herd in front of 4,587 fans...

Lipscomb’s hot shooting in the first half -53.6% on 15-of-28 shooting- carried over into the second half. Eddie Ard scored 21, while LaKory Daniels put up 15 points on Marshall to lead the way for Lipscomb.

In contrast, Marshall shot just 35.7% for the game, including a less-than-stellar 26.9% second half that enabled Lipscomb to jump out to their largest lead of 11 points late in the game.

Ard scored the last 8 points of the first half on two threes and a jumper, and Lipscomb held a slim 38-36 lead at the break. Marshall did not regain the lead after that point. After putting up 12 points in the first half, Marshall’s Mark Dorris only scored three in the second half for a total of 15 in the game.

Taurean Marshall provided a late spark for Marshall, and his jumper with 10:23 remaining got The Herd within two, 53-51. A 5-0 run by Lipscomb provided just enough cushion to keep The Herd at bay, however. Lipscomb used another run -this one of the 8-1 variety- to ease out to the 10-point, 72-62 win.

In addition to Dorris with 15 points, Marshall also had double-digit performances from Markel Humphrey (13), and Tirrell Baines with a double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds).

Marshall now prepares to face a suddenly-hot San Diego squad that downed the Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday in Lexington. Marshall and San Diego tip off the unusual New Year’s eve game at 2pm Monday at the Henderson Center in Huntington. The game will be broadcast on the Thundering Herd/ISP Sports network and can be heard locally in Huntington a 93.7 The Dawg.
