JT Rembert: Fumble return for TD

Click. That's the sound the Marshall offense made all night long against the hapless Buffalo Bulls on Saturday night. The Herd drubbed Buffalo, 66-21, in front of 28,200 at Marshall Stadium. For all intents and purposes, the game was over at halftime.

"I think the first half is the best half of football we've played since I've been here," said Marshall coach Bob Pruett. "When we click like that, we're pretty good."

For Marshall, the scoring was quick and often in the first half. The first drive for the Thundering Herd amassed just 52 seconds, and ended with Josh Davis hauling in a 63 yard Byron Leftwich pass for the easy TD.

Stay with us here, because the rundown of Marshall's 52-point first half performance is about to fly by you. Marshall's 8 first half possessions ended thusly:
Darius Watts made the score 14-0 at the 7:36 mark of the first half on a 12-yard reception.
Brandon Carey ran in from 1-yard out to make it 21-0 just four minutes later.
•Watts caught his second TD with 10:12 left in the second quarter. 28-0.
•Kicker Curtis Head set a new Marshall Stadium record by booting a 53-yard field goal at the 6:28 mark. 31-0.
Curtis Jones took the handoff from Leftwich on the reverse, and ran in from 7 yards out with 2:54 left in the first half. 38-0.
•Just 1:32 later, and Denero Marriott got in on the scoring action with a 27 yard pass from Leftwich. 45-0.
•With just :10 left in the half, Yancey Satterwhite popped UB quarterback Randall Secky so hard that the football shot straight out of Secky's grasp. Good thing J.T. Rembert was waiting to scoop it up and run 34 yards for the TD. 52-0.

Whew.

Yancey Satterwhite knocks the ball loose from UB's Randall Secky. J.T. Rembert returned the fumble for a first half TD (picture, top of story).

It was at this point -with 447 yards passing and 4 TD throws under his belt- that Marshall quarterback Byron Leftwich was yanked for evening. Two quarters of action, 7 possessions all ending with points on the board, 497 yards of total offense.

Goodnight, Buffalo.

"I think this is the week we clicked on all cylinders," Leftwich said after the game. "I think this is the Marshall team that everybody has been waiting on."

The second half of action saw Buffalo capitalize on playing Marshall's second and third team defenders. This did lead to 21 points put on the board by the Bulls, but it was too little and way too late.

However, Marshall running back Wilbur Hargrove managed to juke-and-jive the UB secondary on a spectacular 78-yard TD run in the third quarter. Hargrove broke into the spotlight against UB, racking up 162 yards on 16 carries to lead the Marshall running attack. The 1-play drive consumed all of 14 seconds. Such was the night for Marshall.

""The coach gave me a chance to play, and I got in and showed what I can do," said Hargrove. "It felt great to get in and play behind the #1 line."

Not to be outdone, the Marshall defense did manage to put one more score on the board, courtesy of defensive end Marcus Hairston. Hairston scooped up a loose ball and returned the fumble recovery 11 yards for the last of the Marshall touchdowns.

Marshall amassed a whopping 733 yards of total offfense for the night, while holding Buffalo to only 378 yards. The Marshall defense was led by Yancey Satterwhite's 10 total tackles (6 solo, 4 assists), including one tackle-for-loss, one interception, and one sack of UB's Secky. Dionte' Wilson was close behind Satterwhite with 7 total tackles (4 solo, three assists).

The easy win now advances Marshall to 4-1 overall, 3-0 in the MAC. The Herd hosts 1A newbie Troy State next Saturday afternoon at 4pm at Marshall Stadium. Buffalo falls to 1-6 overall and 0-3 in the MAC with the loss. The Bulls have the Miami RedHawks waiting on them next weekend in Buffalo.
